Here’s What To Do If Your Child Chips A Tooth

August 28, 2023

A chipped tooth is the most prevalent dental injury, especially in children who like to participate in sports and engage in rough-and-tumble play.

If your child chips a tooth—and for all other dental needs—count on the office of Happy Smiles Dentistry of Westchester. We emphasize preventive care and are dedicated to helping every patient enjoy the benefits of excellent oral health. Our comprehensive program of proactive care protects your child’s teeth and reduces the risk of dental disease.

Remain placid. The situation may require your child to seek immediate dental care, but you should set the tone by remaining concerned but composed. If you stay calm, he (or she) will stay calm. And do your best to not cause him to feel self-conscious about the chip.

Put the chip in a sealed canister of milk to protect its viability. This will increase the chances that his pedodontist will be able to (assuming it’s feasible) reattach it. Let your child watch over the container so he feels he’s in control of the situation.

Your treatment options vary and depend on if the tooth is a baby tooth or a permanent tooth.

A tiny chip on a baby or permanent tooth can be filed down until it’s smooth and its surface aligns with the teeth next to it.

Filling in the chipped area with a bonding material is easy, common and economical. The pedodontist will choose a color that will match the natural color of his tooth. Filling in one chipped area is painless and usually takes less than an hour. Work on more than one tooth could require a few visits.

A veneer is good for a large chip on a baby tooth and the best choice for a permanent tooth. A veneer is a resin or porcelain cover attached to the front of the tooth. Again, the pedodontist will choose a color that matches the natural color of his tooth. It costs more than bonding but is more durable and cosmetically excellent.

Your son’s pedodontist will discuss the options with you so you can make an informed decision. When you want a pediatric dental practice that provides your child with the highest standard of personalized care, count on Happy Smiles Dentistry of Westchester.
